Should you study the A-list copywriting greats?

And if so, should you try to write copy like them?

Is it possible to become great at copywriting without actually studying other successful writers? And when we do study them, are we just mixing some of their ways with our own to create copy? Sometimes it feels repetitive. Just using what you already know is proven to work.

I have a few specific thoughts on this.

Including a story from a friend who became incredible at rapping [like, for hip-hop music] that is a perfect metaphor for what we do as copywriters.
