Writing bullets, fascinations, and teasers is one of the most valuable copywriting skills…
And reading the copy on the outside of your junk mail is a great place to get examples!
SIDE NOTE: When someone ask me what I do for a living, I tell them I “write junk mail.” It’s always good for a laugh, I don’t have to explain that I’m a “copywriter” not a “copyrighter,” and it often leads to a fun conversation. Gotta give credit to A-list copywriter, BTMS subscriber, and one of my favorite novelists Richard Armstrong for that one!
I’ve gotten a run of good junk mail recently, and I picked out 3 with particularly good bullet/fascination/teaser copy on the outside.
For today’s video, I read my junk mail…
Then I reflect on what, in particular, made me like each piece of mail…
— Why I thought it was a good example worth sharing…
— What the hidden psychology and strategy is behind the copy (at least as I understand it)…
— What worked and was worth learning from it…
And I even drop some valuable side notes about both online and offline copy plus seasonal direct marketing strategy.
Even if you’ll never write a piece of direct mail in your life, there’s still valuable copywriting wisdom to be had here.
Yours for bigger breakthroughs,
Roy Furr
